The Biological and Environmental Program Integration Center (BioEPIC) aims to harness the power of microbes to solve our most urgent environmental, water, and energy challenges. This 73,000 square foot facility houses staff and capabilities from Berkeley Lab’s Biosciences and Earth and Environmental Sciences Areas. The Lab began the design process in 2018, started construction in 2021, and first occupied the building in February 2025.
In addition to the LEED certification, BioEPIC received high marks for water, energy, materials, site development, and indoor air quality. The building also received an Award of Merit for Excellence in Sustainability from Engineering News-Record.
